We believe that delicious wines and ciders start in the field with healthy soil, well cared-for plants and a thriving ecosystem. It's part of our winemaking philosophy too - to let the fruit shine and add or take away as little as possible on its journey to the bottle.

Our wines and ciders reflect the liquid landscape of Northern Michigan and everything it has to offer.

Folklor was started by Derrick Vogel & Izabela Babinska, two Northern Michigan enthusiasts, lake swimmers and dry Riesling devotees.

We're excited to share that we recently enrolled in the USDA Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP) through the Grand Traverse Conservation District. Over the next 12 months, we'll be working with a mentor towards a set of goals that will prepare us for organic certification.  We're delighted to have John Plichta of @farmhousevineyards in Petoskey as our mentor. FarmHouse Vineyards is one of the first certified organic vineyards in Michigan. We are so inspired by John and Nancy's dedication to understanding, and working with, the rhythms of their farm.  While we have been using solely organic practices on our farm since we purchased the land in 2021, we feel strongly about pursuing certification. For us, it's a promise we are making to you, as our customers and our community, about how we are growing and producing our wines and ciders - in a way that prioritizes the health of our ecosystem, our customers, our future team members and, ours too. It's also an accountability measure to approach our management practices with a holistic, preventative mindset and investing in cultural practices, as much as biological, or chemical intervention.  With perennial crops like grapes and apples, we have an incredible opportunity to encourage biodiversity and prioritize soil health as part of our farm ecosystem in ways that benefit our environment and climate on a larger scale.  As we work towards certification (and beyond) we're also committed to sharing what works (and doesn't) in the hopes of encouraging growers who want to join us.  You can learn more about TOPP at www.organictransition.org

Vines are looking great after a fresh snip ✂️ Every year we remove 80 - 90% of the previous year's growth to make room for the coming vintage! One of the reasons is because grape vines only produce fruit on one-year-old wood. We prune to manage the yield, to maintain vine structure, and to remove any damaged or diseased wood. It impacts the quality and health of the year's crop, and can be the difference between making a profit or loss come harvest.  And it's pretty cathartic to cut the previous season away and start fresh - for the vines, and for us. Because of the exceptionally warm weather we're experiencing this season, we decided to wait and prune at the last possible moment.  Pruning can delay bud break, but at this point, we're not sure that anything will slow the vines down. We've been working on pruning our 2 acres of established vines over the past week.
